As far as House Music DJ pioneers is concerned in Nigeria, DJ Evamic Nzei is most definitely one of the DJ’s in the A’ list, that has held, and is still holding it down.
Born Michael Nzei on September 29th 1989, DJ Evamic Nzei as he is well known as is an influential House Music DJ, Evamic is from Ukwuani in Delta state, He obtained his HND’ in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Dorben polytechnic, he is currently a Corp member in the NYSC.
Without wasting much time, here is an exclusive interview with the Famous DJ.
N E: Hello Evamic Nzei, it feels great talking to you right now, so please tell me about yourself, who is Evamic Nzei
Evamic Nzei: It’s my pleasure, My name is Michael Henry Nzei also known as Evamic Nzei, am a House Music DJ and producer.
N E: Can you describe your approach to art and being a Dj/producer?
Evamic Nzei: To me art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, in my music and during my live set or on radio, I try as much as possible to be creative enough, so I can stand out and still be able to entertain my listeners and still pass the necessary message, creative art is a vital part of me.
N E: Can you please tell us how you got into Djing /production
Evamic Nzei: Have always been a musician right from child, I was a drummer boy in my school and church back then, then I started commercial music when I was in higher institution, I recorded couple of songs and video, one of them featuring Skales, I even won The ‘Nigeria Teens Choice Award’ then later I decided to focus on DJing and production, because I felt been that, I will be able to dig deep and explore the music and discover more sounds,that’s the major aim and happiness.
N E: who do you aspire to? And who influence you the most? Evamic Nzei: I listen to a lot of music, different kind of genre, different kind of artist, so I try to create my own sound and feeling, I love Juju music, so I listen to couple of them too, I like their percussions and guitar, they inspire me a lot, I listen to house music a lot too, I want to be the biggest Export in Nigeria and I believe I can achieve that.
N E: Has your approach to Djing changed since you first started?
Evamic Nzei: Yes of course, I play all kind of music at first, but now I already find my niche, I play just House Music now and am happy with it.
N E: If Djing/production wasn’t your job, what will it be,?
Evamic Nzei: I studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering, so if music wasn’t my thing, I will be practicing.
N E: What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a Dj
Evamic Nzei: I will say my first edition of ‘Lets Go House’ because it was a dream come true.
N E: Can you please tell us a little About ‘absolute house’
Evamic Nzei: Absolute House is a House Music event, we started back in 2017, and And we just concluded the first edition of Yemoja House, it’s all powered by ‘Let’s Go House’.
N E: Do you see yourself as a famous DJ? Why?.
Evamic Nzei: Yes, why not, am putting in a lot of work and effort, My fans are happy, I get calls and feedbacks from where I least expect. So God’s willing.
N E: What style of music do you play?
Evamic Nzei: I play Afro House Music, I try to create my own sound with Afro sound.
N E: What are some of the consideration you take before deciding which track to play next?
Evamic Nzei: I study the crowd and their vibe, then I create my own atmosphere.
N E: Which is that track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you play it?
Evamic Nzei: I will say ‘Don’t Give up’ by Black Coffee ft Vuyo.
N E: Which festival do you dream of playing at?.
Evamic Nzei:Coachella,Tomorrowland, ultra Music Festival etc, and am looking forward to us creating our own music festival here in Nigeria, we have all it takes.
N E: Other than closing time, what marks the end of a Dj performance for you?.
Evamic Nzei: Normally, I don’t judge my crowd by quantity, I judge by quality, am always out there because of my fans, if the organizers don’t put the right things in order, then I might as well not show up but once am at the event, I have to do the job.
N E: What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJs making? What Advice would you give to aspiring DJs?.
Evamic Nzei: Up and coming DJs, they all sound alike, we need creativity, that’s the only way we can stand out, and it will be easy for us to be recognized.
N E: If u have the power to erase and abolish one musical genre, which one would you abolish for all eternity?.
Evamic Nzei: Am a musician, I listen to all kinds of music, so for me, let them all be.
N E: What should your fans be expecting next?
Evamic Nzei: My EP ‘Road to lagos’ am putting in a lot of work.
N E: Have you any thing to say more, and maybe something I have not asked you? .
Evamic Nzei: Nothing really, I will just like to let my fans know that I have so much love for them and my best is yet to come.
